Soundbars are a new type of speaker which does away with the multitude of wires and boxes that used to be necessary to provide surround sound. The sound is literally projected from the soundbar in different directions to wrap the listener in all of the elements that used to be delivered by speakers left, right and centre. Different technologies are used to achieve this, depending on the manufacturer, but the best bit about soundbars is that there is one speaker, one connection, one mains lead and no twirling wires all over the place.

Subwoofers are the speakers that deliver the deep sounds in a surround sound system and no explosion or gunshot would sound quite right without one in the set up. With the growing popularity of soundbars as part of a home cinema package, the subwoofer is the speaker most often kept as the only standalone, to give depth to the sound.

Movie projectors for the home used to be massively expensive, with noisy fans and bulbs that seemed to need replacing every few days. Things have changed lately and now, with a bit of shopping around, an HD movie projector which can be used for games as well as television and DVD can be found for around £200.
